The Tale of
the Teeny, Tiny Black Ant
Helping Children Learn Persistence
by Teresa R. Allen, MSW, LISW
illustrated by Tea
Seroya
Ace, the Teeny, Tiny Black Ant is sad. He is the only ant in the
colony not to have given the Queen a special gift, when he spies a
very small and beautiful blue jay feather. He decides this would be
a perfect gift for the Queen. However, he is faced with a problem.
How can he, a teeny, tiny black ant, climb the very large wall while
carrying his feather?
Along the way, he meets several creatures, including Kota, a huge
caterpillar who offers his assistance, but the Teeny, Tiny Black Ant
wants to do it all on his own. He thinks how proud his family and
friends will be of him. The Teeny, Tiny Ant continues to struggle
and work his way slowly up the wall. Some ants begin to cheer him
on, others yell, “Better give up now, you won’t make it!”, but the
friendly green caterpillar encourages him on, “You can do it, kid.
You’re halfway there.”’ Does he make it on his journey to deliver
his gift to the Queen?
With wondrous illustrations and a captivating story, The Tale of
the Teeny, Tiny Black Ant teaches children not to give up, but
to work hard for things that are important.
