Widows Wear Stilettos
A Practical and Emotional Guide for the Young Widow
by Carole Brody Fleet and Syd Harriet, Ph.D., Psy.D
Widowhood is a frightening prospect for any woman, but the reality of becoming a widow in your forties, thirties or twenties can be terrifying Not only must one face normal grief, but also the additional painful issues that arise with the death of a young person.
Because of catastrophic events such as the Oklahoma City Bombing, the World Trade Center tragedy, the Gulf and Iraqi Wars, the demographic of young widows has grown suddenly and dramatically Out of 10 million single mothers in the U. S., over 40 percent are widows and that doesn’t take into account young widows without children Many survivors face financial insecurity and isolation, because their contemporaries are married, single by choice or unable to relate to the young widow.
Widows Wear Stilettos deals sensitively and insightfully with the many problems and questions facing the young widow: grief and high intensity emotions, managing the practical (financial issues, who to contact and when, what paperwork will be needed) to the emotional (depression, transitory feelings, helping young and adolescent children, counseling, coping with in-laws, returning to work) to the personal (health, self-awareness, empowerment, diet and exercise) This helpful book shows how life can again be fulfilling and promising, offering the gifts of hope and promise
