Cooling Red Hot Relationships
New Ways to Defuse Anger and Keep the Romance

by Shari L. Kirkland, Ph.D. and Lorel L. Lindstrom, Ph.D.

Anger is the most destructive force in personal relationships. Add today’s problems of job pressure, terrorism, war, economic hardships and family issues to everyday stressors, and it’s easy to understand why we’re all a bit on edge. Unfortunately, the person on whom we’re most likely to take out our frustrations is our significant other.

Thousands of couples who had anger-related issues used 1999’s Red Hot Relationships to help forge healthy and loving relationships. Cooling Red Hot Relationships again takes the reader inside Kirkland and Lindstrom’s couple’s workshop dialogues, showing how partners can learn to cope with present-day challenges. The authors, who have contributed articles to publications as diverse as Cosmopolitan and the Journal of Systemic Therapies, identify and illustrate the new and old anger triggers to which we are all susceptible, guiding couples in working past their conflicts and issues. Using a simple, effective four-step plan, Cooling Red Hot Relationships teaches couples to transform destructive or stressed relationships into satisfying, mutually rewarding loves.

New chapters focus on financial problems and anger management, fear of war, terrorism and the anger it creates and the demands of caring for elderly parents and children simultaneously. The doctors remind us that while anger is the number one threat to happy relationships, we can create passionate and rewarding relationships despite today’s pressures.

Shari L. Kirkland received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Arizona. The author of many published articles, she has also served as a relationship expert on numerous television and radio programs including The View, The Montel Williams Show and National Public Radio. She is currently a staff psychologist at Kaiser Permanente and resides in the San Francisco Bay area of California.

In addition to his private practice, he is an independent consultant and practitioner with the California Department of Corrections. He resides in Danville, California.
