The Shocking True Story of a Murder on Snipe Mountain

by Frank J. Daniels

In this electrifying tale of violent intrigue and suspicion, John Bruce Dodson, an inexperienced hunter, and his wife of three months, Janice, head up beautiful, remote Snipe Mountain in Colorado looking forward to the first day of hunting season. What Dodson cannot foresee is that he is about to become the prey. By daybreak of the second day, Dodson lies dead 500 feet from camp, blasted by three shots; the final one hitting him dead center. His wife is hysterical. Is it a sniper? A suicide? A tragic hunting accident?

Frank J. Daniels, District Attorney for Western Colorado for the past nine years, feels it is murder. Now he tells the shocking, behind-the-scenes story of the most fascinating homicide case he’s ever prosecuted. At first, the trail leads him to Janice's ex-husband who it is discovered was hunting in the same vicinity on the day of the killing. Inexplicably, the man abandoned his campsite and fled shortly after the three shots rang out. As the investigation goes on, however, Daniels finds himself casting skeptical eyes on the very rich widow who remarries another heavily insured husband.

This shocking tale is also the gripping story of a crusading prosecutor who vows to get justice for the victim of the crime despite a complex and tangled evidence trail on which he must prove his suspicions are true or find the real killer.

Frank J. Daniels has been a prosecuting attorney for twenty years and for nine years the elected District Attorney for Western Colorado. A graduate of the University of Denver, he earned his law degree at the University of Colorado. A hiker and backpacker, he is an expert on petrified and fossilized wood and the author of Petrified Wood: The World of Fossilized Wood, Cones, Ferns and Cycads (Western Colorado Publishing Company, 1998). He lives in Grand Junction, Colorado with his wife and daughters.
