Mortal Justice
A True Story of Murder and Vindication
by Jeanette Popp and Wanda Evans
When Nancy DuPreist, a beautiful, sunny twenty-year-old married mother, was found maimed, shot and left for dead early on morning at the restaurant where she was assistant manager, a clamoring for justice rang out in Austin, Texas and then the nation.
As they investigated, the police narrowed their persons of interest to two young men, Christopher Ochoa and Richard Danziger. Ochoa was arrested and, after two days of interrogation, confessed, implicating Danziger. They both were convicted and sent to prison for life.
Still, some questioned their guilt. DePriest’s mother, Jeanette Popp, though devastated by her daughter’s violent death and wanting to believe the culprits were caught, began to feel the men were innocent (and they were). She advocated for their release and a continued search for the real killer. In a case noted attorney and Innocent Project co-founder Barry Scheck later called “the most extraordinary, profoundly disturbing false confession case I’ve ever seen”, the search widened, finally focusing on a man who was willing to commit murder as a sacrifice to the demonic spirits he said he heard calling…
Mortal Justice is an emotionally gripping, profoundly human drama. It is a story of betrayed friendship, a battle to overcome human cruelty, discovering inner strength against all odds and developing compassion and growth.
